New analyzers are the first to directly measure energy wasted in electrical systems due to power quality issues and to calculate the cost

EVERETT, Wash. – Fluke Corporation, the global leader in portable electronic test and measurement technology, introduces the Fluke® 430 Series II three-phase power quality analyzers, the first tools to use a patented algorithm to measure energy waste and quantify its cost. The 430 Series II helps facilities reduce electrical power consumption and improve the performance and lifespan of electro-mechanical equipment by providing the ROI justification to mitigate power quality distortion.

Previously, only experts could calculate how much energy was being wasted due to power quality issues; utilities could calculate the cost but the required measurement process was beyond the reach of most electricians. With the new, patented Unified Power function of the 430 Series II, electricians, utility technicians, electrical engineers, field service technicians, and energy consultants can automatically determine how much power is being wasted and calculate exactly what the extra consumption costs are with a single handheld tool.

In particular, the 430 Series II power quality analyzers allow facilities to assess the impact of new energy-efficient, electronically-driven systems from lighting to motor controls to HVAC. While these new models consume less energy as individual installations, they increase the level of power quality disturbance in the overall electrical system, increasing waste energy due to harmonics and reducing the total potential energy savings. The Fluke 430 Series II calculates the monetary cost of that waste energy.

Most popular power quality analyzer made better
Long the most popular three-phase power quality analyzers on the market because of their simultaneous display-and-record capabilities, the updated 430 Series II models feature three new measurement functions as well as hardware, software and firmware improvements. New models have up to 32 GB (8 GB standard) memory, a swappable SD memory card and USB connectivity for longer power and energy logging and faster data download. Screen quality and battery life are both improved and the accompanying software has been redesigned to give users more options to analyze both power quality and power consumption. Both models are fully compliant with the stringent international IEC 61000-4-30 Class-A standard. Each one can monitor systems with up to ten power quality parameters on one screen and can record up to 150 parameters on 4 phases simultaneously, in accordance with the EN50160 standard, and are safety rated 600 V CAT IV/1000 V CAT III.

NEW, patented, Unified Power measurement function
From an algorithm first developed by Vincente Leon and Joaquín Montañana of the University of Valencia Polytechnic as an extension to the IEEE standard 1459, the patented Unified Power function on the 430 Series II was developed in cooperation between Fluke Corporation engineers and University of Valencia scientists. Unified Power marks the first time that any test tool has provided the ability to automatically quantify the energy wasted by harmonics and unbalance, and by inputting the utility rate structure, the user can even calculate the monetary cost of the wasted energy.

NEW Inverter Efficiency measurement function
The 430 Series II Inverter Efficiency function simultaneously measures the input and output power of inverters in solar systems, wind turbines and uninterrupted power supplies, allowing the operator to see how much electricity the inverter itself is consuming and whether it is operating efficiently. The measurements enable operators to adjust settings or make a case for a replacement unit.

NEW Power Wave measurement function
The 435 model includes PowerWave, a “fast capture” system that displays waveforms and half cycle RMS voltage and current values in full detail so motor and generator operators can measure the interaction during switching operations. This allows facility and utility service electricians, electrical contractors, and generator suppliers to easily gather measurements with one tool for load profiling, to prevent motor/drive/load mismatches, and for motor and generator commissioning and start-up testing.

Availability
The 430 Series II models include a soft carrying case, Li-ion battery pack with up to ten hours of operating time per charge, current probes, test leads with clips, battery charger, USB cable, color localization set and PowerLog software. Both models will be available to order in January, 2012. For more information, visit: www.fluke.com/43x-energy.

Special edition analyzer makes it easy to conduct energy consumption studies, load analysis, power quality logging and more

EVERETT, Wash. – Fluke Corporation, the global leader in portable electronic test and measurement technology, introduces the Fluke®434/PWR power analyzer for easy energy analysis. The instrument helps electricians, field service engineers and maintenance technicians uncover energy waste in commercial and factory buildings as well as in equipment and machines.

The 434/PWR can be used to conduct energy consumption studies and electrical load analysis, and to perform power quality logging and analysis surveys. The power analyzer can also help technicians demonstrate the benefits of efficiency improvements by testing energy consumption.

The instrument measures harmonic distortion caused by electronic loads, and analyzes reliability problems by capturing voltage dips and swells from load switching. A full-color display uses industry-standard, user-selectable color coding to correlate measurements with actual wiring. It logs incoming data with a unique AutoTrend function that highlights changes of data over time. The data can then be analyzed with Fluke’s Power Log software, which is included with the 434/PWR.

AutoTrend gives quick insight into changes over time. With a single push of a button, the System Monitor gives an overview of power system performance. It also checks that incoming power complies with standard limits or custom specifications. Trend analysis is made easier by automatic scaling of the vertical axis, so the waveforms can always be shown on a full display.

Load studies and energy assessments

The 434/PWR is a complete three-phase troubleshooting tool that measures virtually every power system parameter: voltage, current, frequency, power, energy consumption, cos φ or power factor, unbalance and harmonics and inter-harmonics. The instrument captures events like dips and swells, interruptions and rapid voltage changes based upon ½ cycle rms values. Two groups of four channels simultaneously measure voltage and current on all three phases and neutral. The 434/PWR meets 600 V CAT IV, 1000 V CAT III safety standards required for measurements at service entrance.

A logging function allows users to customize measurement selections and provides analysis to find intermittent problems or relate power quality issues to other phenomena/events. The logger provides detailed and user-configurable long-term recording. It gives MIN, MAX and AVG readings of up to 100 parameters on all four phases. Averaging time can be selected down to 0.5 seconds (or 1 minute for one day’s recording, 10 minutes for one week, 30 minutes for one month or more).

Extensive data analysis

The 434/PWR can perform extensive data analysis. Cursors and zoom can be used “live” while taking the measurements, or “offline” on stored measurement data. The stored measurements can also be transferred to Power Log software.

Designed to quickly view recorded data, the built-in Power Log software displays all recorded parameters on interactive trends. Users can generate professional-looking, customized reports using the report generator, or copy and paste images into reports manually.

Pricing and Availability

The Fluke 434/PWR model has a U.S. list price of $5,343 and is available for order now. For more information about Fluke power quality tools, visit: www.fluke.com/pq.

Gold, silver, and bronze winners were selected in each category.

“The Dealer Design Award recognition for the innovative 381 Clamp Meter confirms what we hear all the time: that technicians want a meter that makes a real difference in the way they do their jobs,” said Clement Feng, Vice President Global Marketing, Fluke Corporation. “With its unique detachable display and iFlex probe, the 381 delivers the performance and flexibility HVACR technicians need to help them get their work done quicker and more easily.”

This is the fourth major recognition this year for the Fluke 381. The meter also won the EC&M 2011 Product of the Year Category Winner in the portable measurement equipment category, the 2010 Control Engineering Engineers’ Choice Awards in the portable measurement equipment category, and 2010 Plant Engineering Product of the Year Silver Award in the Maintenance Tools and Equipment category.

About the Fluke 381 Clamp Meter

The first clamp meter with a wireless display, the Fluke 381 allows one technician to do the work of two, by leaving the clamp in place and taking the measurement readout to another location up to 30 feet away. The accompanying iFlex flexible current probe allows the user to measure large, inflexible, or hard-to-reach conductors up to 2500 amps. And the clamp meter itself allows electricians to take all of the most common measurements required by today’s complex systems, quickly, without complication, and with extremely high accuracy. That means fewer tools, less hassle, faster results. The U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Fluke 381 is $499.95.
